Immersion with mild hypothermia
There are so many variables that the casualty may present in many different ways, always wet and cold. The aim to get them warm and dry!
If conscious and responsive then assume any hypothermia is mild – re-warm, dry clothes, food and warm drinks, protect from elements.
Secondary drowning
Be aware that an apparently fully recovered near drowning casualty can develop problem up to 24 hours later and experience airway spasm – secondary drowning! Therefore always seek evacuation for medical observation.
Possible drowning
In this situation a casualty could appear dead from hypothermia or from drowning.
In a maritime situation with a survival suit it is more likely that asphyxia by water has led to the situation than hypothermia, there is no way the first aider can distinguish.
Treatment
- Get the casualty out of the water ASAP – do not waste time attempting horizontal lift if it will cause delay.
- Assuming drowning history
- Follow the drowning CPR protocol
- Follow the instructions given by an AED if available.
Remove cold wet clothing, wrap in dry blankets and handle limbs gently.
